Bruins History: Petr Klima’s Triple Overtime Goal, Wesley’s Missed Open Net

Petr Klima overtime goal

Petr Klima with a lazy wrister that wins the game for the Oilers in the 3rd overtime

This was a late night with a bad ending. First, a few interesting items about the game:

  • It was game 1 of the 1990 Finals and was played on May 15, 1990.
  • It went 15 minutes into the 3rd overtime and is the longest game in Stanley Cup history
  • The Bruins were down 2-0 going into the 3rd period. Ray Bourque scored 2 goals, including one with 90 seconds left to tie the game.
  • The game ended at 1:23 AM Boston time.
  • 2:41 into the 3rd OT, a bank of lights exploded and the game had to be halted for 30 minutes. It brought back memories of the 1988 finals where game 4 had to be canceled in the 3rd period of a 3-3 game because the power went out.
  • Klima had been benched for long stretches during the game because he was playing so poorly.
  • Klima's goal game at 15:13 of the 3rd OT
  • Much like Bucky Dent, in Boston he is known as Petr F*cking Klima
  • Most analysts felt at the time that even though it was game 1, the Bruins never were able to recover from the loss. Seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Here's Klima's goal:

And the other moment that all Bruins fans will remember is Glen Wesley missing an empty net in the 2nd overtime.
