The MLB App Has Changed the Way I Watch Baseball

MLB app

This season I find myself having iPad the MLB app open most of the time when I'm watching the Red Sox. It has become an addon to the experience of watching baseball that I find very helpful.

Here's what I use it for:

  • Pitch counts – always available. Only available part time on TV
  • Strike zone tracking – always available.
  • Quick boxscore checks around the league
  • If I miss a bit of the game I can go back and look at the play summaries and check stats
  • Highlights. Especially if its a play I missed, but also to look back on plays.
  • Highlights of plays in other games.
  • Put on the radio broadcast of the game when I just want to casually listen
  • Occasional checking out the free MLB.tv game of the day
  • Checking the standings
  • Checking league wide stats.

A few additions I'd like to see:

  • Kind of a picture-in-picture deal where you can have to gamecasts running by having another game running in a small corner of the screen.
  • More detailed stats on the pitcher-hitter matchups
  • More highlights
  • Highlights are available more quickly after a play
  • Better stats exploration. It has the beginnings of what could be a great interface for browsing seasonal and all-time statistics. I'd love to be able to filter by years.
  • Add team based stats
